The National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly’s (NICE) End-of-Life Issues Theme Team – in collaboration with the Global Institute of Psychosocial, Palliative and End-of-Life Care (GIPPEC) and the Institute for Life Course and Aging (ILCA) at the University of Toronto – is hosting the 2017 World Hospice and Palliative Care Day Special Lecture.

Camilla Zimmermann, MD, PhD, Head of the Division of Palliative Care at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the University Health Network, Senior Scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Research Institute, Professor of Medicine and Rose Family Chair in Supportive Care at the University of Toronto, will provide a brief overview on the Global Institute and its current research activities – including the expansion of its quality of dying and death research to Kenya and Uganda – prior to Stephen R. Connor, PhD’s (Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance) keynote address on universal health coverage and palliative care.

Stephen R. Connor, PhD is the Executive Director of the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA), a network of national and regional hospice and palliative care organizations with the vision for “… a world with universal access to hospice and palliative care.” Its mission is to foster, promote and influence the delivery of affordable, quality palliative care worldwide. Dr. Connor has 35+ years of palliative care experience as a licensed health psychologist, advocate, author, consultant, educator and executive. Furthermore, he has worked on palliative care development in over 25 countries including across Asia, Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. He has published 125+ peer reviewed journal articles, reviews and book chapters on issues related to hospice and palliative care for patients and their families and is the author of Hospice: Practice, Pitfalls, and Promise (1998), Hospice and Palliative Care: The Essential Guide (2009 and 2017) and co-editor of the WHPCA/WHO Global Atlas of Palliative Care at the End-of-Life (2014). His 2017 World Hospice and Palliative Care Day Special Lecture will focus on the work of the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance in the international context – bringing the theme of the Day ‘Universal Health Coverage and Palliative Care – Don't Leave Those Suffering Behind’ to full circle.
