My husbad suffered a severe stroke on Sunday morning.  This is the 5th stroke in 6 years.  Both his cartoid arteries and completely blocked and inoperable.  He has severed a steadily decrease in life for this time period.  Unfortunately on Sun,. he has now lost his ability to talk, use of right hand and limited mobility.  While we were at the hospital, he told the Dr he is requesting MAID (medical assistance in dying) as no can no longer fight this disease.  I have brought back home.  Palliatve Home Care is stepping up to help us and the MAID team is doing the first assessment on Thurs. am  with 2nd assessment next Tues..  I am so stressed out and tired.  I know this is my husband's wish and for this all to happen in our home...and I will be with him through out.   I am so filled with completely saddness that I will only have a max. of 2-3 weeks left with my husband.

Hi Gramma Kim.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm really sorry to hear as this situation, it sounds like a tough one. I hope you were able to enjoy quality time with your husband. It’s good to hear your local palliative care program and others were able to provide supports to you and your husband.

If you are interested there is likely other supportive resources that may be available to you in your local community. Often palliative care programs and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) teams will be well connected with supportive resources and if you wish, would be able to connect you.

I want to let you know there is a resource focused on grief and loss that may be helpful called MyGrief.ca. It’s a resource that incorporates bereaved family members and professional bereavement experts sharing their personal and professional understanding and perspectives on grief to hopefully help others in their grief process. It is available online, free of charge. If interested you can click here to view the resource.

Thank you again for sharing your story. We wish you well.
