My mom is terminal and considering medically assisted death

Hi,

My mom's lung cancer has metastasized to her brain (where she has at least 7 tumours). She's been given less than six months to live and has decided not to pursue treatment. She's also looking into medical assistance in dying, which I completely support. But that support for her has brought up a lot of complex feelings. I'm wondering if there are any support groups out there for people who have a loved one considering this procedure or who have gone through with it. I feel like I need to connect with people who have encountered the same conflicting feelings I'm going through right now...

I'm flying home next week to go to an appointment with her about medically assisted death, so I'm also wondering what kinds of questions we should be asking the doctors. Are there any specific things we should be bringing up with the doctor?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi NS,

Thanks for sharing your situation with the forum. Depending on where you are living, you may be able to access a support group for those who are considering or have accessed MAID. In Manitoba, there is a fairly new group that runs in Winnipeg and is hosted by Palliative Manitoba and the MAID Team. Feel free to give them a call at 204-889-8525 ext 232 for more information about that, along with other resources that may be helpful.
