I don’t know how to help a loved one.

We lost my mother 2 months ago, and I am worried about her husband. We live in BC, and he is in Nova Scotia, so it is hard to be there for him. We try to reach out and send pictures of the grandkids, but he often doesn’t respond. But then we will get messages from him saying that he can’t do this anymore, there is no point in going on without her. It’s very hard to try and comfort someone like this, especially when we are grieving ourselves. I feel like he needs to talk to a professional, but I don’t know what resources are available to him in NS. He doesn’t have employer health benefits and is low income (on disability).

Welcome 3ekki,
Canada is such a vast country - and even more so when thousands of km separate us from the people we love and want to support. And of course you are all grieving as well.

Depending on where your mother's husband lives, if you go to this link for Programs and Services in Nova (sorry the hyperlink is not working for me) Scotia https://www.virtualhospice.ca/en_US/Main+Site+Navigation/Home/Support/Resources/Programs+and+Services/Provincial/Nova+Scotia/Grief+services.aspx#id_a15e223f02f18c365c6d9ebdbde39de0

I hope you can find something that would fit.  Does he have connection with a healthcare team or the people who cared for your mother? Would he be open to contacting them?

I am also thinking about you and your family. These are some of the resources available https://www.virtualhospice.ca/en_US/Main+Site+Navigation/Home/Support/Resources/Programs+and+Services/Provincial/British+Columbia.aspx#MapAnchor

As well, you might find mygrief.ca can offer support to you all.

Do you have siblings or family either in BC or Nova Scotia?

Katherine
