canadian goverment admits marijuana kills cancer cells

in a recent artical i read the goverment stated that reserchers have discovered that marijuana kills cancer cells,you have to study the information for yourself but i am living with terminal pancreatic cancer to witch there is no cure,therefor i would like to try some edible marijuana and see how i do,i really have nothing to lose and all to gain...unfortuantly i live in chilliwack bc,canada,about an hour and a half from vancouver,where you can get medical marijuana,i dont have anyway to travel there and i live on disability and cant afford to travel there,if anyone knows of a voulunter driver progam that could help i would really like to know...it would be ashame if it was helpful and i had no access to it......thanks and would love other opinions on the matter.....RADICALRICK

Hi Radicalrick,

You raise a topic that up to now has not been raised in this community. I know that doesn't mean it hasn't been discussed - just not on this forum. 

I was looking at the information we have on the Virtual Hospice - not sure if you have seen this video Medical marijuana use in palliative care narrated by a Winnipeg Oncologist Dr. Paul Daeninck as well as Authorizing Dried Cannabis for Chronic Pain or Anxiety: Preliminary Guidance put out by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

I think one of the cautions with the use of medical marijuana is that it has not yet been subject to the gold standard test of medication via clinical trial.

Have you discussed the use of marijuana with your health care professional?  I believe it would need to be prescribed right? In terms of travel assistance - your best bet would be to contact your local Canadian Cancer Society office - they might have a suggestion.

What an interesting question!
We've just had Tweed move into the old Hershy plant nearby.
I'm struggling with arthritis and depression. I'e been getting some info. My doctor isn't really in favour of it, despite being a cute young thing!

I've a friend in long-term care who had access to weed in B.C., this hasn't been possible for here here. I'm so sad.

P.S. There are many groups which will provide drivers.
Check out hospice groups in your area, as well as community support groups.

I did some sleuthing for the article and research that you referred to in your original post - that researchers discovered marijuana kills cancer cells. I found several US and UK news publications that discussed the research conducted by British scientists. The lead researcher Dr. Wai Liu wrote a November 2014 op-ed for The Washington Post called: How pot helped shrink one of the most aggressive brain cancers

I find the sensational headline somewhat irresponsible because upon reading one discovers that the study showed that "cannabinoids could play a role in treating one of the most aggressive cancers in adults." The study was conducted in a lab and on mice, but not yet with humans. And not all cancers are created equal. This study was for one type of brain cancer - glioma. Cannabis may not be effective for other cancers.

However, as Katherine and Jennifer have pointed out, medical marijuana can be clinically effective for some people to manage pain and other side effects of chronic disease and cancer treatments.

Up until reading your message, I thought Tweed was only a small town in southern Ontario. But now I see you refer to Canadian producers/suppliers of medical marijuana Tweed. One nevers stops learning eh?

What reasons has your doctor given for being against the use of medical marijuana for symptom management?

hes not against as far as i know,havent asked yet..there ar 2/producers/suppliers in canada,tweed.com as you mention and tilray.ca located in nanimo bc...my new concern is they only supply dried marijuana no edible or oil,which is what im looking for,a real shame a real shame.

marijuana can be quite effective for people undergoing chemo,it helps with nausea,appitite,and pain depending on the strain of marijuana,i would reall like to try the edible products but they are unavailable at this time,and by no means am i going to try get them off the street,you dont know what your getting or the dose

Dear Radical Rick

As Colleen pointed out marijuana is only relevant for you in possibly managing pain and reducing side effects.

I'd like to point out that as a researcher I myself have actually killed cancer cells. Unfortunately I was trying to keep the cancer cells alive in tissue culture. One should treat reports of cancer cells being killed with a grain of salt unless well controlled animal studies are involved. Universal front page headlines would follow.

Good luck Radical Rick. I think you should be able to find a sympathetic physician.

Hello all,

I agree, there aren't studies I've seen that MM will stop cancer, Tian. Right now, it's all about pain control. 
Tweed, , in Smiths Falls, have some amazing people. They have specific strains for specific issues, and a physician education program. B.C. is well ahead in this area, but Tweed seems to have hired some amazing peeps.
My physician says there isn't evidence that depression can be controlled by MM.
He said he would look into it, though.
I have panic attacks, as well. My meds for depression are too high, when hubby had his surgery I had to double up for relief. 


I am hoping, by the time it will be useful for us, it will be easier to get a medical certificate.
Rather than eating it, a vaporizer is what they recommend.

 Tweed has a compassionate pricing policy for those unable to afford it. They've begun a study on MM for PTSD.
